Topic: The Writer's Life (05/13/10)
March 24-29th

While ladies from our critique group attended Mt. Hermon, a Christian Writer’s Conference in Santa Cruz, my husband and I had our own writer’s conference. We weren’t ready to attend a “real” conference, so we had our own. We titled it: Do The Write Thing. We scheduled time for writing, reading articles on writing, critiquing and poetry. We gained a wealth of information - now we need to apply it. I’m looking forward to our next conference. MAYBE someday I’ll be able to attend the Faith Writer’s or the Mount Hermon Conference. “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”

April 18th

April is National Poetry Month. Today we went to Borders. They had story time. The anticipated story was Fancy Nancy Poet Extraordinaire, written by Jane O’Connor. I smiled as the young girls, dressed as princesses, headed with their parents toward the children’s department. The young listeners sat mesmerized by the story. Nancy is such a delightful character. I can see why they love her. The children were given a small snack and hot chocolate. While the story continued, I quietly sit on the floor reading children’s books. I silently hoped one day my story would be read at a local bookstore. Better yet, that I would be reading my story. “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

Monday through Friday, I’m in the “office”, pursuing my writing career. Each Monday, I check the New York Times Best-Sellers lists. I take note of the children’s list, especially the picture books. I check the local paper reviews on books. Today I read Little Polar Bear by Hans de Beer. It’s about a young bear that gets separated from his father; then friends help him return to his anxious father. I’m amazed. I’ve read over 600 picture books. I keep a card-file of information on each book I’ve read.

May 5th

I went to the library today. I usually go about every two weeks. Lord how grateful I am that it remains open during these difficult economic times. I appreciate the Friends of the Library and their efforts to provide new books for our library.

May 8th

This was a difficult week for writing. Try as I could, it felt like my well was dry. I needed a break. A few times I’ve received inspiration when I’ve walked into church. Oh Lord, there are days I’m not sure about my writing life. I’m such a novice and have so much to learn. Lord, there are so many writers. Is there room for one more? You know my desire is to honor you with my writing. Give me grace to persevere and remain diligent in my day-to-day writing life. And may I always be available to assist other writers on their journeys. There have been so many that have influenced my writing life, whether they know it or not. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

May 13th

Thursdays are exciting! I learn what the new writing topic is at Faith Writers. This week it’s The Writer’s Life. I like to mull it over in my mind throughout the day, searching for a possible idea. I am forever grateful for FW. It launched my writing career. But I need to hurry and get ready for our critique meeting. Critique groups. They can be brutal – but oh so necessary! Everyone seems to be further along on their journey. Sometimes I feel out of place.

May 15th

Looking out the window while washing the dishes, I noticed a squirrel at play in the tree outside our window. He turned upside down, and his tail was swaying back and forth. What an opportune moment. I ran for my camera, but when I returned to the window, the squirrel was gone. I’ve learned that ideas can quickly disappear like busting bubbles - if I don’t write down the ideas as soon as they come. Guess I’d better start writing … I have a deadline to meet.

Liked your originality chronologically journaling your thoughts and ideas along with adding scriptures relevant to what you were feeling.
I felt privileged being allowed to peek inside your private life and look forward to being a part of your writing journey.

Don't worry about putting the number of words you use as it's checked when you submit it. I did the same thing :)

I love the rookie' journal, and how you put thoughts down as they come, because if not they are soon lost in the muddle of life. Good job and keep writing.

I, too, have felt this very statement: "I’m such a novice and have so much to learn. Lord, there are so many writers. Is there room for one more?" The answer is an emphatic, "Yes!" I can tell God's placed talent within you. I can see it in your writing. And on your part, 600 children's books! Wow! But that is exactly how we improve; we study other authors; and then we study them some more. I commend you 100%. Keep up the great work, and beat away discouragement when it comes. You have a gift. Never stop using it.
