Mornings at our condo's were spent traipsing through Papa and Grandma’s throughway to the beach. Some sleepy-eyed kids would go fishing early. But the rest of us were late sleepers. Early or late we’d always grab some bacon or cereal or toast and maybe spend a little while chatting with Papa and Grandma. Sometimes Great Grandma was there embroidering squares for quilts. Each child received a small quilt as their blankey when they turned one or two.
Then there was wamp-boarding. There were beautiful shallows for great wamp-boarding. My nephew, about 10 years old, taught me, about 35 years old and a pleasant pumpkin, myself, how to wamp-board. It was so much fun! No, nothing happened. I stayed up, a little hesitantly, the whole time but had a blast. I learned to ride the waves in on a wake board. The ocean is so beautiful. The glistening diamonds in the water, the waves, the depth and width and height all speak of the Lord’s love, not to mention how my nieces and nephews speak His language also just by being who they are.
There was always a shopping trip to the quaint, little shops in town. Cute little trinkets were purchased or a journal to keep of our trips. Mom, also known as Grandma, asked all of us to write in her journal a special memory of each trip. That journal is the most precious treasure to us. Our nieces and nephews have a great sense of humor. We have so much fun reading it Papa and Grandma made copies for all of us to keep.
Some of us girls would get together and do scrap booking. The afternoon was hot outside and the sun was bitter so we gathered on someone’s balcony and put together the pictures of our lives, not just Fernandina pictures. We talked about them, spilt coke on them and laughed about our stories and mishaps.
We’d each of the adult couples pick a night for cooking a meal special for everyone else. When it came my turn all the nieces helped me. The family dinners were chili to taco’s to spaghetti…then we needed something without tomatoes. So we had pancakes, eggs, and bacon. (That was the girls and my night) And then one day a snack was needed so I was going to show the nieces how to cook a spaghetti squash (very educational) in the microwave. It went beautiful until “POW!” It exploded in the oven!. “Uh oh!” It was a tough clean-up. But we still laugh!
There was a porgy plant nearby where one of our uncles would take the kids to fish when they weren’t fishing at the beach. They’d catch flounder and whitefish and we’d have our delicious seafood dinner at the end of our trip. This was definitely a bittersweet night. All the stories of the week came out once again. And plans for the trip home were made.
A beach is a wonderland in the summer with pumpkins running all over it! The beauty is overwhelming. It can bring a family closer and be a pathway to conversing and laughing together. It was a precious time for us and for the kids. Our Fernandina trips were memories we’ll never lose and neither will the pumpkins!
