Over the past few months, it has been our weekend ritual to go out to breakfast for the weekend. We look forward to going since the restaurant is in a huge flea market mall. My five-year old grandson’s favorite stop is the Pet store.
So let me paint a picture of what happens every time we go “to see” the puppies. He profusely begs for one. The bad thing about the adventure is that, at the end of our tour of the pet shop, you would find me dragging him out of the store saying, “I don’t have $500 for a puppy!” His reply is “you do have money!” and to his frustration I say “but not for a dog!”
Calel, my grandson, picked out a black Labrador puppy that he liked, “I want that one!” he said gleefully. It broke my heart that we couldn’t purchase the puppy but we repeated this ritual over the following weekends. With every visit, he insisted that we purchase the puppy. I even went on-line, looked at shelters, and read newspapers to find a puppy for a reasonable sum but it was to no avail.
Mr. and Mrs. Powers, our neighbors, are ministers and recently moved to North Carolina. They’ve been trying to sell their house while establishing a ministry in North Carolina. They make schedules visits to maintain their property and on this particular visit, they arrived with a black Labrador puppy. Needless to say, my grandson took to the puppy instantly.
The next morning, my husband and I were working in the front yard. I looked up from wrestling a hosta in the ground. There was Calel easing his way over to the neighbor’s yard. I could see from my yard that the puppy was in Mr. and Mrs. Powers front yard alone and tied up. Not knowing the temperament of the dog, I kept a watchful eye but the two got along wonderfully.
The following day my husband and I were in the front yard when we noticed that Calel wasn’t there. I looked up from my roses to locate his whereabouts. Calel was standing in the front yard with Mr. Powers. Just then, I heard the Mr. Powers holler across the yards. “Your grandson had stolen his puppy’s heart.” We all let out a hearty laugh.
I said to my husband that the Holy Spirit said that the neighbors were going to give Calel the puppy. My husband said, “no way, they take that dog everywhere they go!” Mr. and Mrs. Powers cut their two-week visit short and we found ourselves waving good-bye to them and the puppy. Good-bye, good-bye! It seemed like a bad thing had just happened! My husband looked at me out of the corner of his eye, he didn’t say anything. So I wave to the puppy and our neighbors as they set on their journey.
Several weeks had passed, when one day we returned home after an exhausting day. We had made our usual stop by the Pet Store, eaten dinner, and returned home. My husband reached the door first and there was a note shoved in the crease of the storm door. It was from a mutual neighbor, asking us to call Mr. Powers in North Carolina. I had no interest in lingering downstairs while he made the call. I proceeded up stairs, put my grandson to bed, and was in the bathroom preparing to get ready for bed when in rushes my husband up the stairs.
He said “don’t scream!” He goes on to tell me that the Mr. Powers called to ask us if Calel could have the dog!
It really would have been a good to say that I didn’t say “I told you so!” but I couldn’t resist saying it! The bad part was that my husband wouldn’t release me to tell my grandson about the dog! The good part is that Mr. Powers wants to personally give the puppy to my Calel on Saturday.
This was a good life lesson for me. I know that God still speaks to His people! He is concerned about our smallest desires even when it means sending a puppy hundreds of miles to answer a child’s prayer!
