student nurses huddled together on a British lawn dressed
in flared pants, ‘gypsy’ tops, and platform shoes. We were
all dressed alike with variations in colours and designs.
We were IN fashion!
This was the 1970s. We were IN!
Five years later we had to dump these clothes.
They were no longer IN.
So in the 1980s, we donned leg-warmers, oversized shirts
and “Joan Collins” style dresses to church. We watched
“Fame”, “Dynasty” and “Dallas” and wore shoulder pads.
Laura Ashley’s pretty floral dresses with gathered sleeves
were IN.
I loved those.
Lady Diana was IN!
So was Margaret Thatcher!
I, was no longer a student nurse. I was a staff nurse with
responsibilities; more shoulders, more responsibilities.
Not sure what happened about fashion in the 1990s
because I was too busy getting married, moving to the USA
and making Daisy Kingdom dresses for my daughter. I do
remember that step aerobics was IN.
I was so preoccupied with getting IN and OUT of maternity
dresses that I did not notice what anyone else was wearing.
Moms ‘n Tots and baby shots were In for me.
I came up for air in 2000 only to note that fashion icons were
anorexics and the dire prophesies for Y2K disasters did not
manifest. Now in the high tech era of 2009, I notice again
that flared pants and the big prints are IN and the bold
beautiful coloured tops are back. Skirts and dresses are IN
too thankfully.
I am happy to declare that there are some new IN things;
Boys dress like boys; hooded pullovers are IN, layers are
IN, and cargo pants are IN.
Amazingly I have perceived that people over the age of 60
do not “follow” fashion. They have their own individual
unique style and the word I believe is ‘comfortable’. They
are not out to impress anyone.
Here is another IN thing. Following Christ is IN.
Despite Christianity’s mainly negative press in the secular
world many people in many nations love, accept and believe
in HIM, Christ Jesus Our Lord. To believers He is always IN
and never OUT.
Remarkably, because of God’s grace, once you are IN
Christ, you are never OUT. He lives IN you.
Conversely, I am sure that you know that ‘church fashion’
has changed over the years.
In some ‘churches’ it is definitely OUT to wear jeans or
shorts to meetings, while in others, jeans and open neck
shirts are IN.
Formal suits are IN in some, and never seen in others.
Yet we are all loved by Christ, no matter what style we are
IN or OUT of.
I wonder whether Peter and Paul were IN the fashionable
wear of the day? In fact what did Jesus wear?
As a travelling Teacher and Rabbi I believe that He wore the
clothing of His day.
Does it matter what fashion is IN or OUT?
Who decides anyway?
My question to you today is, are you IN the Kingdom of God
or are you OUT?
That is the important question....
