My Grandma was cooking Curry Chicken or was it Curry Goat; this was now a part of our Carribean culture and for me it was the highlight of the week.
Many nations have come together to create this beautiful mosaic that is the Carribean people and culture. The stamp of India which is primarily seen and felt in our kitchens. The stamp of Africa displayed in our skin, hair, dance and spirituality; and Europe has named us and educated us.
I see India in my mother's almost straight,not quite kinky hair and her small straight nose, her gentle oval features and her wide hips.
India is reflected in my best friend's family name Japal. Many East Indians migrated to the Carribean in the mid 1800's, settled and some intermarried with the African and European descendents.
Many Indian people have chosen commerce and are traders like their traditonal Indian forebears. It is impossible to miss the impact that India has on the Caribbean peoples and cultures.
Today in the West I see the adoption of India's colourful flamboyant fabric that drape the feminine form disguised as modern fashion. Only yesterday I purchased an equisite Indian shawl made of silk and cashmire, it's well known trade name is Pashmina. I was drawn to its fragile feminine beauty,for it reminded me of its people and that small part of me that is of India.
