Dear Peter,
Surprise! Surprise! This must be a first for me to write a letter on Christmas Day, but everyone has gone to bed — tired out it seems. But not me — I’m just not ready for bed for some reason or other. Hence this letter to you.
Anyway before I go any further I wish you a Happy Christmas! That is if it reaches you before the twelve days of Christmas are over!
It’s been a good day. Sorry you couldn’t be here with us. John and Mary came on Tuesday, with Jonathan and baby Sue, and Simon and Betty arrived yesterday with Richard and Jane.
The children were up early this morning and had a wonderful time opening their gifts and playing with their toys. Then after breakfast, we all went to church. The singing was great, carols of course with some special items by the Sunday School. The preacher challenged us to make Christmas special as we contemplate again the coming of God’s Son into our world and why He came.
You know, Peter, it set me thinking of the long preparation God made for this event. It didn’t just happen. It was planned — the when and the where. And then to have His Son born like any one of us through a woman’s body. A miracle if ever there was one.
Have you ever thought about Mary and Joseph. It was told that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem and for that to happen Mary and Joseph had to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, many many miles. I wonder how long it took them. No jets, no buses, no cars — just a donkey. And Mary was pregnant! But God took care of all that too.
Yes, I am rambling on, but I’ve got all night to do so. I am just not sleepy.
So Jesus was born — a baby in a stable. The angels sang, the shepherds worshipped — the story of Jesus had begun.
Peter, somehow I think we’ve got it all wrong. Christmas Day is so traditional and commercialised now we forget the wonder of it; the miracle that took place. The Son of the God of this universe came into this world as a new-born baby! A helpless dependent little baby. And why? To make a way for sinners like you and me to be saved. A miracle!
And more, a miracle has taken place in our lives too because we’ve asked Jesus to save us. Think about it. That’s what I’ve been doing.
God with us. God in us. Think about it.
Yes, it’s Christmas Day and the world has gone crazy, but we don’t have to join in. We can have our own celebration and commit ourselves afresh to live for Him.
The rest of the day here was good. We played games together, sang some carols and had a great Christmas Dinner. Thank God for a wonderful mother. Of course we helped too.
Again I’m sorry you couldn’t make it this year. Maybe next time. Anyway it has been good writing to you. Take care of yourself and think about the Christmas miracle. Thank God for it.
Your loving sister,
Carol

I like the relationship between this sister and her brother. Very nice.
The competition is always quite intense in Level 1, so well done. Keep up the great writing.
