thought I knew it
when Momma opened
the front door and I saw a
radiant smile grace her care-worn face.
I
thought I knew it
when her green eyes
glittered with jubilant tears,
and her arms opened wide, beckoning.
I
thought I knew it
when those arms pulled me close;
so close I could hear our two hearts beating
the same song of loneliness, and sadness for years lost.
When she brings me out of the cold and into the warmth,
and I feel old wounds and regrets fade
in the sparkling lights of the Christmas tree;
and painful memories like a mist,
evaporate in the fragrance of
apple spice and cinnamon,
I think it’s
true.
When I hear music, carols proclaiming the Savior’s birth;
And I remember God’s gift of hope for mankind, and
the possibility of
forgiveness and
reconciliation.
Even for me.
I think it’s
true.
When my mother says, “I prayed for this day,” and I realize
how long she has waited, patiently and faithfully
waited for a miracle in this Season of Miracles;
her hands clasped in continual prayer
for the return of her
prodigal daughter,
I think it’s
true.
My heart breaks and I fall to my knees; any lingering doubt is washed away in a flood of remorse. “Forgive me,” I beg. She kneels beside me and holds me tight; wiping the guilt from my moist cheek with her hair. She whispers in my ear, again and again, “I love you,” as our hearts beat a new song...together.
Now I know it’s true, I am finally home.
