My Father In Law & I were both Marines. He in WWII and I during the “relative peace” that followed.
He likes me. I rate better than his other son-in law who happened to be a deserter.
When I married his daughter, I had the honor of adopting his eight year old grandson.
One of the first things that I did was take my new son camping. My new son didn’t think I’d come through on the deal. He’d been promised some things by a few guys that never happened. Even his mother was afraid that I might back out. But to be perfectly honest, this was mostly for me. I showed him how to pack his gear and I took him out to my favorite camping place, a few miles back in the woods. I brought MRE’s (Meals Ready to Eat) from MY gear and I showed him how to use a knife and how to cook and fish and hunt. (Actually, HE showed ME how to fish.) There’s a LOT you can pack into three days & nights. You can show a young boy how not to be afraid of the dark, and how to start a fire without matches and how to take a dump in the bushes. We actually went back and looked at that first dump he took and laughed. (We have a VIDEO TAPE!) It was like a victory for him. Every time we went camping after that, we looked for his turd.
Time went on and we had a lot more camping trips. His grandfather, who had been at the Chosin Reservoir, asked me a question one time...
“Didn’t you get enough of that when you were in the Marine Corps?”
My answer is simple. I got enough of killing and hate and death. But I’ll never get enough of sitting around a campfire with my son. I’ll NEVER get enough of watching his smile while he’s toasting his marshmellows. I’ll N E V E R get enough of making coffee and frying eggs at 4:00 A.M. and seeing the tent flaps rustle, and seeing a little sleeping bag with a nose sticking out of it, emerging to greet another day.
Would YOU ever get enough?
