Son, I can’t get these words out of my head. Followed by “These are the good times, you’re gonna want this back, you’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast.”
It’s like a home video running through my mind with these new songs playing in the background…you’re three years old will you ever talk at all? I vow to myself to never say the words “be quiet”. You are so funny as you communicate with us…acting out everything, without a single recognizable sound I recognize the “way I talk to the oven” as you act it out before my eyes. It sure made your daddy laugh.
Don’t blink, you’re six years old, and your words have finally come. Those words I vowed to never speak finally slipped out one day in the car. “I’m sorry son…I promised never to say this but will you please BE QUIET.” That was the first but it wouldn’t be the last.
It wasn’t so much the words but the never ending discussion of tractors and combines I couldn’t listen too anymore. “Mom, what job is it where people make better tractors?” I think that’s called a mechanical engineer. “That’s what I’m gonna be, an engineer mechanic.”
Wake up and your eight years old singing in the back of the car. “I like it, I love it I want some more of it. I don’t know what it is about that little gals OVEN but I like I love I want some more of it.” Boy did you love that song and absolutely no one could convince you that it wasn’t about ovens.
I blinked, woke up and at twelve years old, you’ve discovered gangster rap and “coolness” all at once. The rhythm is better but the lyrics are designed to drive a mom insane. “Mom, mom, listen to this one. It has a message, and it’s real, this guy is doing the right thing.
“Right son, but tell me this, because I really don’t understand, when he says ‘I’m sorry’ does he mean I’m sorry I did this to you my wife/girlfriend, or is he saying, I’m sorry I have to tell you this because I got caught, or what? Do you realize he just found out his ‘girl on the side’ is pregnant and now girl number one is going to find out so he has to tell her. So what exactly does he mean by the words ‘I’m sorry’?”
Boy does that time go fast. At fifteen years old you take the class, get baptized and join the church. I’m amazed. For you there was no question. I could only watch in amazement at how you knew your own mind.
Don’t blink, wake up and you’re sixteen suddenly you are old enough to drive. Mr. Responsible watching out for all the younger guys. The other parents want to know how we do it. We take a lot of teasing from those other parents “what’s it like to have a perfect kid?” We just smile and repeat, it’s not us just luck and God.
All of a sudden, on Thursday morning the song has stopped. There are no more verses to add to Don’t Blink. Those were some good times. We’re gonna want those back, we’re gonna wish those days hadn’t gone by so fast.
