“We’re home!” Matt yells excitedly. The smile on his face is radiant and then he claps his hands and squeals with the joy of a young child not the thirty-nine year old he is. With all his disabilities, he still knows when he is home.
We have been preparing for him. His room is ready. There are clean sheets on the bed, clean clothes in the closet and his portable radio has fresh batteries. The refrigerator is stocked with all the things he loves. We have oranges, sausage, donuts, chocolate cake, hot dogs and ice cream. We have prepared a place for him. His joy at coming home makes us glad.
When he is home he can have the desires of his heart. The wonderful thing is: his desires are so simple! He doesn’t want anything we aren’t pleased to give him. He asks: “Go outside?” Sure! “Want to go for a ride?” You bet! “Glasses?” Right here! When it comes to food, again, all he has to do is ask. Someone is usually stationed in the kitchen ready to serve as short order cook.
His loved ones are always ready to greet him. We, his mom and dad, are there. He has been known to call his grandmother Darlin, when he sees her and will sometimes say, “Hey sweetheart! Give me some sugar.” This was always her greeting to him when he was small. His sisters will call or come by. He and Bailey, the Big Dog, will visit on the porch.
He loves the porch. He loves rocking in the rocking chair as the sun and soft breezes touch his skin. There is always a smile of deep contentment on his face when he is sitting out there. He is so pleased to be home.
In John 14, Jesus says, “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you I will come back and take you to be with me”. Home! My desires, like Matt’s will be simple. Everything will be prepared for me. Everything I want will be there, but His presence will be enough. When I get there many of my loved ones will be waiting for me, and when I see them I will know I’m home. I’ll grin and yell for joy. Just like Matt!
