I have a secret that not even my closest friends know. I was adopted. Its not that I am ashamed to be adopted , its that the people who have raised me since birth are my parents and will always be my parents. This story is about the love of my adoptive mother and the truth in the words “Blood dose not make mother Love dose.”
My mother the women whom adopted me took me in when she was fifty years old. She gave up so much for me. She could have been out enjoying retired life with her friends instead she was at home changing diapers and cleaning up after a baby. I can only imagine how many nights she stayed up worrying about me when I had a fever or was sick. I remember the first day of school, she stayed outside in the car the whole day and did the same for the rest of the week. We lived in Florida and I can only imagine how hot it must have been. But thats the true love of a mother. I remember the birthday parties and holidays she would always make seem so magical. She was magical and amazing. Everyone who knew her loved her. She always took the time to help the least among us. I remember once when we were in a Drugstore, there was an elderly women at the counter, her medication was too much so she was asking if she could just get enough for that day. Mom went around to the corner and told the pharmacist she would pay for the elderly womens medication. The pharmacist had tears rolling down her face. Thats the way moma was. She never saw someone in need she did not help. And she always taught me to do the same. I can only hope that I am at least half the woman she was. In the last years of her life she was diagnosed with a terrible disease called ALS or Lou Gerick's disease. Its a terrible disease that slowly leaves its victims paralyzed. I stayed by her side for four years. I can not even describe how terrible it is to watch someone you love go from someone so energetic and spirited to being someone paralyzed and dependent on someone to do everything for them. She lost her joy and that broke my heart. I put of going to college and a career to stay home and take care of her. Now I have people tell me how they admire me for doing that but I can't figure out why. I did the right thing, what every child should do for there parents. I love my mother there is no other place I would have been. She had done so much for me it was the least I could do for her. She got to where she could not even talk, the disease was that bad. But in her last hours of life through struggled speech she told me she loved me. God how I miss her and love her. She loved me so much and taught me so much. I pray to God that I am as good of mother to my future children as she was to me. She was the true example that blood dose not make a mother love dose.
In memory of moma who went home to be with the lord April 3rd, 2008. Your forever in my heart I love you.
