When I first saw my Aunt Mary after my mom had passed. Iwas 14. I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw her, my dad asked me if I was alright. I said, "Uh-huh" as we were walking closer, then of course, I realized it was my Aunt Mary. I told my dad, "She looks just like mama.
Actually, my Aunt Mary claims they were actually opposites in many ways. For instance, my mom was a bit of a "neat-nic, and my Aunt Mary more on the "comfortable" side. I chuckled at that 'cause I'm more on the "comfortable" side myself.
My Aunt is a "night owl" and I'm one of those "the early bird gets the worm" kind of gal. We both love to read, her house is full of books. Mystery and suspense novels.
Since I was not able to get a lot of womanly advice when I was growing up, my Aunt gave me that. I enjoy talking with her laughing, discussing the latest books we're reading etc... We even have similar interests.
Book stores, of course, one of our passions. We may live several hundred miles apart, but my Aunt has a store she goes to where she can buy, sell, or grade books and I do too.
Jewelry is another one of our peek interests. A few years ago for my birthday she got me a cross necklace. She had gotten one for my cousin and her granddaughter too. She mailed me a charm bracelet, silver, with my name on it in gold.
My Aunt and I had just begun this close relationship in the early 2000's. Although I haven't seen her in a few years, we send each other letters & cards, and of course, the occasional phone call.
Just by having this relationship with my Aunt, there has been many things I have learned about my mom and her family.
My Aunt loves flowers, she has told me about the ones she's planting outside in her yard. I am partial to daffodils and tulips myself. Oh, and I like yellow roses.
I have always liked Oil of Olay products and my Aunt does too, she has more than I do.
I guess you could say, my Aunt has brought out the woman in me that I never knew existed. My Aunt Mary has so enriched my life in many ways, beyond measure. My eyes are tearing up as I write this just thinking about my Aunt. Writing this has given me an appreciation of my Aunt that I hadn't realized.
God gives us what we need, when we need it, I'm in my 40's now. The relationship that I've built with my Aunt over the past 7 years is priceless.
I'm planning on seeing my Aunt this summer. OOPS! The phone is ringing, gotta run, it's my Aunt Mary!
