Good Friday – although the name is somewhat misleading. I mean come on, GOOD Friday – what was so good about our Lord being beaten and crucified. It was a dismal day as His disciples and followers watched their messiah being lead up the hill – bloodied and beaten, without the strength to carry His own cross. I realize that without His death on Friday, we would not have Easter Sunday – and that is why we call it Good Friday.
Easter Sunday – finds many of us in church singing “He has Risen”. Our Lord, Our Savior rose triumphantly out of the grave to give us hope and establish a new covenant, where God writes His law upon the hearts of His people.
And that is what we remember about the Easter season. But I dare to venture to take a look at the three days in between – the days in which “the Son of man was in the bowels of the earth”. (Matt 12:40)
Jesus did not descend to this region for a picnic but to wage war against Satan. He went down there with the sole purpose of taking back the keys of hell and death from our enemy (Rev 1:18).
While, I have an excellent imagination, George Lucas, the writer of Star Wars – Episode III, aided my imagination of what this battle may have been like. There is a scene in the movie, where Obi-Wan Kenobi seeks out Darth Vader on a planet that is much what I imagine hell would be like. The planet was covered in flowing lava. It was in fact an unrealistic scene in that no human would have been able to withstand the heat as those two Jedi did. Yet, the battle of good over evil raged as Darth Vader gave into the dark side of the force.
Much as Satan, an archangel in heaven turned from worshiping God to wanting to be god. He was cast down to earth and when Adam disobeyed God, Satan took the keys of death and hell in triumph over mankind. Jesus sole purpose was to come – live a pure, obedient life to God – so that He earned the right to descend into hell, where He battled for three days until He took back the keys of death and hell so that mankind could once again live eternally with God. Then on that glorious Easter morn – He rose in triumph as our victorious Lord and Savior, that if we call upon His name we would have eternal life with Him.
