The kids were supposed to be in bed by eight, but nobody told the baby. Everyone slept, tucked lovingly in each of their beds, all of them except the three month old babe cuddled in the crock of her arm.
One eye open, feet dragging across the floor she dances, paces, and shuffles in attempt to lull baby asleep and keep herself half awake, half alert, and baby content.
The clock blinks in bleary eyed numbers while she silently pleads with her fussing babe. If only morning would come, she thinks, perhaps then I can sleep. If only the baby in her arms would drift off into slumber, for a minute, or two, an hour, if only she could too.
But the night is long, and spiteful if your name is mother.
To wish for morning will bring no relief, no sleep, no comfort, for mornings come along with the pitter patter of little feet well rested from a long night of blissful sleep. While morning may bring the babe to sleep, the smells of bacon and eggs will call mother back to her feet.
The long night brings forth frustration and tears, not to mention, come morning the wide awake children to feed and clothe. What is a mother to do then? Up all night swaying to a tune all her own, and listening to the soft lilt of her own voice. She feels quite alone. Yet not once does she look beside her, take a deep breath to refresh her, or feel the strong hands which hold her upright. She’s simply too tired to focus on anything but the babe in her arms.
If only she knew God was standing there, right beside her, all through the night.
He whispered in her ear when her eyes drooped, and her arms began to lax with baby dangling from elbow to wrist. He took her by both arms and waltzed across the room to a tune He filled in her head and knew would sooth the wailing cries of an infant. He touched the child’s cheek and whispered endearments, while looking up and giving the mother encouragement.
She may have dozed a time or two, but His sight never wavered from her. His strength held her while she leaned into Him for support. His focus remained steady, and His voice soft as His touch remained consistent.
When the break of light broke the sky and a sliver of dawn crept in, the mother yawned and looked down at the sleeping infant swaddled in a blanket dozing at last. Perhaps it is then she looked at Him and saw it.
The glint in His eye, a shining of pride only a father could bestow upon His child. A smile is formed on upon her exhausted face, but her heart is filled with hope. She greets the morning with the song of praises humming from her lips.
