He found himself looking at cold wet dirt and couldn’t see a thing ahead. That crazy dog just ran in here after something. He called out “Bo,” pulled himself on his belly a little farther into the opening.
“Bo, come here boy,” panic was giving a squeaky sound to his voice. He was sure that Bo could hear him. He just wanted to play games.
Taking a few more wiggles, now the opening was bigger and he was able to stand. He cupped his hands and called again.
“Bo, Bo, come here, boy.” But there was no dog coming. His eyes were adjusting to the darkness, but he still saw nothing and heard nothing. He took a few more steps deeper in and called again.
He took a few more steps and a few more steps hoping to get closer to his dog. The farther he went the darker it became. The darker it got the more uneasy he felt. Where could his best friend be? He saw him come in here. How much farther could it be to the other side? That’s it; Bo’s probably out on the other side already. He stepped a little farther, but he still saw no dog and no light from the other side.
“I’ll just go out the other side and he’ll be waiting for me. I’ll yell at him so he’ll never do this again.”
“Bo, where are you? Bark for me, Bo.” But no bark came.
The darkness was so thick he was sure he could feel it. He knew he could feel the water seeping into his sneakers. Not only that, he was beginning to think his heart was going to come right out of his chest.
He thought about turning back to where he’d come in, but what about Bo? He couldn’t just leave his best friend like that. He walked a little farther feeling the side of the cement with his hand. The water was getting deeper.
He called Bo time and time again, with no reply. Then he heard something! What was that? It came from behind him. He stopped; maybe it was just his imagination. Another few feet into the dark that now seemed to have no ending. His calls became more urgent. “Bo, Bo, Bo!” They became screams now. Each time he called he got louder and louder.
Finally, he was too scared to go on. He turned around to go back the way he’d come in. To his surprise it was just as dark in that direction. He couldn’t see where he had come. He moved in what he thought was the right direction, keeping his hand on the wall. He walked and felt with his hands like a blind person. He wondered if he’d past the entrance. It’s probably dark out there, just as dark as in here.
He felt tears wetting his cheeks. He was lost and was farther from home than he was supposed to be. Papa would never look for him here. Bo was lost somewhere too. He was crying in loud sobs and would have been happy for someone to hear him.
He leaned against the wall and slid down it until he was sitting in a couple of inches of water. He cried until he cried himself to sleep. Exhaustion had given him peace.
He suddenly jumped-- a voice! “Benny, Benny, are you in here.” The voice said.
“Here, here I am.”
From the other side of him came another voice, “Benny, go to your papa’s voice.”
He stood up and listened again, “Here, Benny come to me.” That was Papa’s voice. He still kept his right hand on the wall, but his left hand reached out in front of him hoping to feel his papa’s hand.
Soon he was in papa’s arms and was headed toward the lights of lanterns. One of the men stood at the entrance with Bo on a leash. Once they were out side Benny hugged his dog, and then scolded him for running away.
“ What ever possessed you to do something so foolish?”
“Bo was lost.”
“So you disobeyed all rules and got lost too.” Papa’s voice was soft, but stern. Benny knew he was right and was ready for whatever punishment he’d give.
“I guess there’s a reason why I’m supposed to stay close to the house.”
“Yep, the reason’s love, our love for you.” Papa was smiling now as he took Benny’s hand.
