I’ve been thinking about my guitar playing, coffeehouse days back in the late 60‘s and early 70‘s…I used to practice singing and playing for hours, belting out the songs from the “folk era”. The war in Viet Nam was at its peak. My friends and my brothers were at risk to be drafted by the Army and sent to fight a war few understood. It was a scary time! Most of the songs I sang were anti war songs, songs crying out for peace, songs that begged to put an end to the killing of our young men. I sang those songs with all the passion of my young heart.
Once the war ended and the troops returned home, the passion behind those songs died. Suddenly, I found I had nothing important to sing about. The songs were no longer relevant. I remember sitting in my room trying to sing, but the songs felt empty and lifeless. So, my guitar stood in the corner collecting dust for a long time.
Then, when I was 23 years old, I met Jesus. He came into my life, filling me with His presence and love. Suddenly I had a new song in my heart and a new passion to sing about my Lord and Savior. I’ve been lifting my voice in praise to Him ever since. His song fills me! He is my song! He will never become irrelevant.
I’ve shared these memories with you to say this… God has given you an amazing musical talent which will open up all kinds of opportunities for you. Please Josh, choose your songs and your causes carefully. I’m here to tell you that the only song worth singing is Jesus. Let Him fill your heart with His music…then belt it out with all the passion you have. To God alone be the glory!
