My grandmother was a joyful woman, whose Peace flowed over onto me, just by being with her. She was as hands-on as a person could be, when it came to her grandchildren. We read and played and sang together. Chinese checkers was our favorite game, when it was my turn to have a sleepover at her home. She even let me make a pallet to sleep on at bedtime that took up most of the living room floor, without a word about the giant mess I was making. My grandmother looked at me, while we talked or played as if there were no where else she’d rather be, than right there with me. She listened to my childhood questions intently and made me feel like I mattered all the time. My heart warmed at the thought of spending time with her.
When she brought me to church with her I felt like one of her prized possessions, as she took me by the hand to my Sunday school class. I didn’t even mind that she asked the pastor to let me sing a song during the worship service, whenever I visited. Sitting next to my grandmother, I felt loved and rested inside. And it wasn’t just because her purse carried all the mints and hard candies I could eat.
When I think of that music that my grandmother made, as she moved about her home doing laundry, or grading papers, I am stilled. The Peace and Joy of God has been lived out in the flesh, through my grandmother’s life. What better way to learn how to lean on Jesus than to watch the walk of someone who loved me? I hope that I am able to follow her example and offer that kind of Love to my own grandchildren, someday.
