TITLE: A Picture of the Whole Family | Previous Challenge Entry

As both the girls walked into the house and shut the door Sarah’s parents met them coats in hand. “Thank you so much for coming on short notice Jenna. Sarah just loves having you as her babysitter.” Jenna smiled and shook Mr. and Mrs. Anderson’s hands. “I’m glad I had the night free. I would hate for those two art show tickets to go to waste and I love spending time with Sarah.” Sarah looked at Jenna and then her parents with a pleased expression. Sarah’s dad laughed and tugged lightly on her braid. “Yeah, one of my coworkers gave me these tickets just today. He was going to take his girlfriend but I guess she broke up with him! Life can be so unpredictable!” The group chuckled as Sarah’s mom and dad said their goodbyes and headed out the door. “We shouldn’t be gone more than an hour or so.” Mrs. Anderson called out as they left.
Sarah looked at Jenna and said, “So you usually bring something special for us to do! What did you bring tonight?” Jenna opened up her big red backpack and let Sarah peek inside. Sarah giggled as she saw jars of colorful paints and even some special art paper. “I thought we could do some art ourselves since your parents are enjoying the art at the museum tonight! Sarah jumped up and down and exclaimed, “I think that is a stuuuuupendous idea! Let’s get started!”
As they sat down to the table and spread out all the colorful supplies Jenna asked, “What are you going to make a picture of Sarah?” “I want to make a picture of my whole family! Mom, Dad, me and our kitty Scratch.” “Great idea!” exclaimed Jenna. “You could even give it to your parents when they get home."
The time flew by as the girls painted and chatted about all sorts of little things. Soon it was time for Sarah to head to bed. “Where are my mom and dad? Mom thought she would be home in time to put me in bed.” Jenna looked and the clock. It was getting late. “I am sure they will be home soon Sarah. Why don’t you put your picture right on the front table so they will see it?” Sarah agreed and carefully set her picture on the table. After a bedtime story and a prayer she climbed up into her bed and clicked her lamp off.
As Jenna walked down the stairs she started to feel a little concerned. It was almost midnight. Just then the phone rang. “Jenna I am sorry I couldn’t call sooner. On the way home a truck ran a red light and smashed into the passenger side of our car! We are just leaving the hospital now. My wife only has a few cuts and a bruised arm. It really is a miracle.” “Wow Mr. Anderson. I am so sorry about the accident! I am really glad you are okay.” “Thank you Jenna! We will be home soon.”
As Jenna hung up the phone she took a deep breath and then she heard it – a sniffling sound. “Oh, Sarah! I thought you were sleeping!” Sarah stepped into the kitchen. “There was an accident? Is my mom or dad hurt?” Jenna sighed, “Except for a few cuts they are just fine. Should we pray and thank God He kept them safe? “Ok, Jenna.” Sarah said quietly. Jenna held Sarah and thanked God for protecting her parents and for giving Sarah peace. As they were both saying a loud “AMEN!” the girls heard the door open. “Mom, Dad!” shouted Sarah. She ran down the hall into her father’s arms. “Oh, mom! You have so many bandages!” “It’s okay sweetie. They are just little cuts. I will be fine in no time!”
Sarah brightened as she remembered her gift “Look! I made a picture of our family!” As Jenna watched from a distance the whole family fought back tears as Mr. Anderson breathed a soft prayer as they all looked at the picture. “Thank you Jesus for keeping our family together.” Mrs. Anderson smiled at Sarah and gave her a gentle hug as she said, “This is by far the most beautiful piece of art I have seen all night.”
