LORD, the Church's Ladies Meeting will be held at my home in two days! I have so much left to do and I am running out of time!
I must grocery shop, bake and ice two cakes, prepare all of the finger foods and sandwiches, and make four salads. The way things are going, I'll probably have to kill, boil and pluck the chicken for the chicken salad, and grind the corn into flour to bake the bread!
The house looks like a college dorm just before final exams. It needs a deep cleaning. Space has to be made for thirty women. The laundry has to be done, floors vaccumed, steam-cleaned and mopped, furniture rearranged for seating, and multiples of dainty home decos dusted.
I have to pick up extra chairs from the Church to seat everyone. My car will only hold 3 at a time. I'll just sit on the floor. I won't have time for that fourth trip for the 10th chair.
All this seems like enough but the preparation agenda is bursting at the seams. I have to go across town to pick up a borrowed punch bowl, mow the one-acre yard, trim the shrubs and clean the windows and blinds - especially the bay window because no light comes through it for all the fingerprints.
LORD, I'm sure that You will see to it that all will go well and be in place before the next 45 hours and 16 minutes is past. I'm sure that You will help me find the time to make all of the reminder calls about the meeting. What I'm not sure of is that I won't be twisted into multiple knots after all the preparations and that I won't have time to prepare all the food.
I can just see myself at the meeting, slowly leaning over on the floor (from where I will sit),
drifting into a state of exhausted sleep during our guest speaker's presentation! On top of that, I know I will snore and disrupt the meeting, not to mention probably becoming a publicly shared "memory" of the Ladies Group for many events to come.
LORD, help me! I am very familiar with the story about Martha and Mary in the Bible and their ministry "meal" for Jesus, their honored guest. I truly understand Mary's insatiable desire to sit at the feet of Jesus. I want to be able to stay awake while our guest speaker leads the Bible study. However, right now I am in the throes of Martha's plight of wanting a presentable home and
Who am I supposed to be in this present day predicament of mine, LORD - Mary or Martha?
