Tyler was confused. “To what?”
“To help out at the Community Kindness day?” Katie replied as she took a bite out of her peanut butter and jelly sandwich. She looked at Tyler, mouth full of sandwich.
“Wasn’t planning on it.”
“Wha nah?” She managed to garble through the peanut butter stuck to the roof of her mouth.
“I don’t know. I don’t like the whole idea of the stupid thing,” Tyler ventured to say. “I think it’s kinda stupid.”
She finished swallowing. “What do you mean?”
Tyler looked up at the clouds. There was one shaped like a mouse.
“Well?” She insisted.
“I dunno, you know, the whole helping out the community thing. It’s just kinda lame.”
She smiled at him. “You don’t even know what it is do you?”
He looked at his shoes. One of his bows was coming undone. He’d have to fix that.
“That’s what I thought,” she said. “You should come. I’m not gonna force you, but it’s good for you.”
“What is?”
“Helping other people out other than yourself,” she said with a smile and took another bite of her lunch. Her cheeks filling up as she chewed.
He just smiled back shyly and stared at the picnic bench he was sitting on top of. There was writing all over it. Jim had apparently been there sometime before. Tyler wondered what Jim was doing with his life.
“You know, it’s nothing difficult. I think we’re washing windows on cars,” she said after swallowing.
“And that’s supposed to do what?”
“Loosen people up.”
“What do you mean?” Tyler said, looking at her. She had deep brown eyes and long brown hair that was gently moving in the breeze.
“Maybe they’re having a rough life and don’t know Jesus,” she said.
“And washing their windshield is supposed to bring them to Christ?” Tyler scoffed.
“Not necessarily, but maybe it can crack their shell a little bit. Just a little bit. That’s all they need sometimes,” she said, and then looked up at the clouds. The mouse had evolved into a dragon.
“I don’t know,” Tyler replied.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to come,” she said as she watched the dragon turn into nothing.
“I might come, I don’t know. I’ll have to see what’s going on.”
“Your shoe’s untied,” she said, noticing his shoes. “It’s okay. But maybe, if you can’t come for the whole thing, you could come get your window washed.”

Also, who was Jim? He was mentioned briefly, but what did he have to do with the story?
Anyway, I hope Tyler decided to help out with the Community Kindness day! :)
