for my son
who soon will walk
amidst the ruined gardens
of Babylon...
and dwell in that
ancient city
of weeping history,
Baghdad.
Teach me God
to daily,
hourly,
pray
the very highest,
the very finest,
the very purest of
mother-prayers.
Imbue
my
words -
weight
my
wishes -
amplify
my hopes and thoughts and dreams
for his perfect safety.
This much is true already:
for his preparation,
I am praying.
For his leaders in the training fields,
I am praying.
For his chaplains in Godly nurture,
I am praying.
For his comrades in esprit de corps,
I am praying.
I ask too,
that in these,
some of life's longest hours...
he remains who he was always created to be,
and even more than this,
that he will by the force of this task,
become
a man of towering strength,
golden character,
filled with wisdom.
For me,
I ask,
for courage as great as his,
belief as firm and true as my son's,
and for a heart of honest compassion such as he has for his fellow man.
I ask for us both,
through the year ahead,
October to October...
(a year of captured harvest)
Your gift,
God,
of a
a peace
that surpasses
all earthly understanding...
a peace
not just for us,
but for us all.
Amen
