Topic: Melody (08/24/06)
STEPPING BACK


I took tonight's subject semi-seriously. When I learned that the topic was "melody" I stepped back from my usual attempts at just writing and went out on my back porch to think about things. I took my dog with me so that he could sniff around for awhile. That's his job and he takes it seriously. His name is "Rocky" and that should say it all.

He sniffed and I thought and that's the way things SHOULD be.

It occurred to me that there is music in this world that fits almost any situation. Have you ever noticed that?

I don't want to get too melodramatic here but I could swear that I heard music in his paws as he came back from his sniffing duties. As my hand touched the head he humbly offered for a pat, I could feel harp strings singing with the touch of the hair on his elderly dome.

I thought more about music fitting situations.

I liked the fact that when I'm in an elevator, as I'm going up to the fifteenth floor, I can hear "da da, Da Da, DA DA, Dah Dah, DAH DAH, DAAHHH".

I like the fact that I am brought to tears when I hear "It Is Well With My Soul" in church on Sunday morning. Especially when it happens to be sung "off key" by a bunch of christians who are imperfect and just trying to praise the Lord.

I am brought to wonder and amazement when I actually see the stars and hear the rolling thunder and "How Great Thou Art" pops into my brain.

I think of song as prayer. I think of life as a stage where the score is written in "ad lib" style.

Whattaya think?

Are you hearing music?

For tonight, I invite you to hear the music of life. I'll grant you that it is profoundly ""ol fogey" music but that is all I have to work with. Listen to Peter Paul and Mary sing "Puff the Magic Dragon" and remember your childhood innocence. Listen to Cat Stevens sing about a Father and his Son. Take in John Fogerty and Creedence and the slashing guitar riff in "Up Around The Bend" and recall your days of rebellion. Don't forget the breath taking, heart breaking lines from Barry Manillow in "Mandy"...When you kissed me and stopped me from shakin.

Don't be afraid to embrace the melody. Don't be worried that someone will think that you're a nerd because you actually LIKED the Partridge Family. (You thought I forgot about that didn't you???) I THINK I L O V E YOU.

Let your life have it's own personal music.

Now if you'll excuse me, "Crimnson & Clover" by Tommy James and the Shondells is on and I need to go out for a spin in my '65 Chevelle Mallibou (328 under the hood).

I think I'll drop the top.

Of Course "Rocky" will go with me.

He has to bark at police officers, but hey, He has a melody in his brain too.

This is a really fun piece. I like the journal approach.

I enjoyed the 'golden oldies' even though I'm too young to remember them! :)
