“Lord, if you love me, then you’ll snap a branch loose from this tree I’m under and please let it squeeze the life out’ta me!”, she sobbed.
She lay there for some time, eyes shut, waiting, finally realizing the branch wasn’t about to break. As she cleared the rain of heartache off her face, she noticed her Grandpa Jigs sitting on a stump next to the tree.
“Child, I could hear your song clean up to the house. Now tell ole Jigs what’s got your heart tore up this way?”
“That’s just it Grandpa….there ain’t no song for me! I didn’t get picked for the girls choir again and nobody knows how much I love to sing. Why, if I don’t get to some singing soon, there ain’t no telling what could happen to this voice of mine.” Cassie’s eyes once again filled with tears as she lay her head back down in the grass.
“There, there child”, Grandpa smiled, “didn’t anyone tell you, Miss Cassie Lou, that you’re already part of the biggest choir that ever was?”
Cassie picked up her head, trying to control the waves of hurt and looked at her Grandpa with new fascination. “Me, in a choir, what do you mean?”
“Well, honey, God put each of us on this earth, all singing the same song, all part of the same choir. The difference is, we each carry our own melody. Sometimes we sing together, sometimes alone.”
“Grandpa”, Cassie looked at him with disbelief, “how can that be?”
"It’s called a life song, Cassie. Our life songs are made up of different notes or things that happen to us, some are high, some real low and even some in between.” Cassie sat silently, her eyes asking for more. “Like the day your mama gave birth to you, well, that was one of my highest notes.” He paused. “And the day your Grandma Mabel died, now that was the lowest note I’ve sung so far in this melody God’s given me.”
Cassie moved in closer, not wanting to miss a word.
“See now Cassie, today you sang a real low note, something hard and hurtful happened. But I’m here to tell you, there are many high notes just waiting for you to sing them out.”
“But why do we have to sing the low notes at all, grandpa.”
“Well, child”, his eyes welling with tears, “ If we were all singing the same note, now what kind of choir would that be? You trust God, Cassie, He already knows how much you love to sing. You know, God gave you the desire to sing for a reason. You let Him work out when and where you‘re supposed to use it.”
Cassie lay her head on the old man’s knee. “Grandpa, do think that God will ever let me sing alone?”
The old man put his hand on her head as he watched the wind move quietly through the grassy field. “When you’re singing those high notes, honey, you feel just like you’re singing solo, but truth is, when you hit those low notes, you find out in a big hurry, you’ve been singing a duet with God all along…yes, child….all along.”
“Grandpa Jigs, what’s a duet?”
