Oh, here’s a rocking chair. Let’s sit in the sunshine and talk awhile. It’s a lovely spring day and God is good!
Do you remember when you were Queen of the May? I do. You were about seven years old and you led the dance around the May Pole. Your blue eyes sparkled, your blond curls bounced. You walked on air because the sun was shining and the whole world loved you.
Do you remember all those mixed emotions about Santa Claus? I do. The first time you realized he really existed was when he brought you that gorgeous porcelain doll in the wedding dress. Then your brat of a cousin, when you were around ten years old, whispered to you on Christmas Eve, “You’re getting a blue bicycle and Jane’s getting a red one.” Early Christmas morning, as you faced the tree and there stood a blue bicycle, you knew Santa was a hoax. Every time you rode that bicycle, you were disappointed.
Do you remember the first time you kissed your husband? I do. You felt your heart throw wide its doors. Then the reaction began in your body. Every inch of flesh came alive and cheered as you melded with him becoming totally one. During your years of marriage, remember how your strengths and weaknesses complemented and completed each other in an unending circle of love and protection.
Do you remember when your first child was born? I do. His tiny fingers and toes were a miracle, a dream come true. When he grabbed your finger and held on, your world rocked. When you nestled him in your arms and your husband reached down to give you and his son a kiss, your life was complete.
Do you remember what your friend did the night before your husband’s funeral? I do. Unexpectedly, she said, “Jean, this crowd isn’t going to leave the funeral home until you do. You go home and get some sleep. He won’t be by himself, I’ll stay here tonight.”
Do you remember the first time you realized God lived in you? I do. You sat in His presence and knew He was in you and you in Him. You felt so safe, so loved, so complete. That day you knew wherever you went He would be there, walking with you and protecting you.
So the Prince of Peace and I continue to talk…and talk…and talk because Matthew 10:31 says, “Are two sparrows not sold for a penny and not one of them shall light on the ground without your Father’s knowledge? …You are of more value than many sparrows. (RSV)
