The baby is crying, the phone is ringing, the spaghetti is boiling over, and my toddler is hanging on to my pants! Ok, I know this is my job, but I haven’t heard the lunch bell blow for quite sometime now. I’m talking weeks! It would be music to my ears right about now.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love my life. I love being a mom and a housewife. I am very cognisant of the privilege of staying home and raising my children, and I am very thankful. I love taking care of my family and our home. I consider myself to be very blessed with the things God has given me. There are just those days that are so overwhelming, you just need a little time to be by yourself and just be quiet.
Ok, let me prioritize a little. The answering machine will get the phone, I’ll turn off the stove and deal with that in a minute. I think I will just sit down and hold my two darlings, both of whom seem to think they need all of my attention right now. It will soon be nap time and maybe, just maybe, I will get a few moments to myself.
Spaghetti for lunch, what was I thinking! My children are covered, hair included, with red sauce. They look more like aliens than humans. The dog, trying to be helpful I’m sure, is under the table devouring any and all noodles that make it to the floor. I say “make it to the floor” because a vast majority of them are landing on his back. So now, not only do I have red children, I also have a noodle covered dog with enough sauce on his feet to leave paw prints all over the house. What a nice afternoon I have created for myself!
Ok, there is no point in even trying to wipe the children off, they are going straight into the tub. They think we are having a great big fun day. A bath in the afternoon, what could be better than that! At least this should relax them and they should sleep well. Nice long naps, I can only hope!
The children are asleep and I can now turn my attention to the sauce and noodle covered kitchen. Where to start? Perhaps I should hunt the dog down and clean him off first (he should be easy to find, I’ll just follow his tracks!) and then the floor, the table and the counter and sink.
Finally, I’m finished, and very exhausted! I may have just a few minutes to myself before it all starts again. Where can I go? The newly cleaned dog is following me everywhere! I have just the place, I’ll grab the baby monitors, and make my escape.
Ah, finally, a place, I go in and shut the door. I take a breath, quiet my heart and begin to pray. And now, I hear my husband calling for me. He opens the door and looks at me a little confused.
“Sweetheart, why are you sitting on the floor of our closet?” he asks, trying not to laugh.
I smile at him, “Because, it’s been one of those days and this is the only place that I could find a little personal space.”
“Ok, I’ll deal with the kids when they wake up. You stay as long as you need to.” He winks at me as he closes the door.
Knowing that I actually have a minute to regroup is so refreshing. I’ll take a few minutes and my world will be fine again.
