The cashier tried to keep up with the inflow and the outflow. With three little credit card terminals to seek authorization for the charge, she juggled with open black folders, gazed carefully at the bill before slotting in the credit card into the little terminal and punching in the numbers and while waiting for the little printouts to stagger out, immediately occupied herself with the next bill to settle. She wanted more light at the counter but in keeping with the atmosphere of this dining establishment, her request for more light to help her with her work had not worked out.
Citibank's Platinium Credit Card was dark blue in colour; the black silhouette of the city line etched from left to right. Two of these Citibank cards had appeared within minutes of each other and the cashier laboured to sort out which Citibank card went with which bill and the appropriate credit card slips. A call came in and while answering, she continued with the shuffle of the papers and the cards and that was when the mistake happened. The cashier slipped James's card with Joe's bill into a black folder and the credit card slips which went with it. Joe's card ended up with James's bill and the credit card slips in the black folder. With the black folders emblazoned with table numbers, the waiters looked for the one with their table numbers, picked it up and saunter over to the customer's table for the required signature.
James, a pastor, did not want to take his parents to this swank establishment but was overruled by his wife. For weeks, he had worried over his flock thinking they were too busy with their lives and hardly having any interaction with those who do not know Jesus. In fact, James thought he himself was like that which had led to an off-handed non-verbalized thought prayer that the way would be opened for him to relate to a non-believer. When the black folder was returned to his table, he signed the slips and placed Joe's credit card in his wallet.
Joe, a smooth talking sales manager, guffawed at a joke and almost spilt his drink when the waiter arrived with his credit card slips. He led a highly demanding lifestyle constantly punctuated by visits to fine dining establishments and dodgy entertainment outlets to satisfy the demands of his customers for the sake of sales. He was not cognizant that he took up James's credit card.
Some weeks later.
As his secretary entered his office, Joe passed his credit card statement to her to submit his claims to Finances. She glanced at the figure and thought her boss had not been working the clients.
A worried pastor stared disbelievingly at his credit card statement wondering why his total bill was so high and seeing a listing of transactions to places he knew he would not go to. The call to customer service at the bank proved fruitless. All they said was those transactions were charged to James's card. James wondered if he was seeing but not seeing. He decided to risk it; he called a friend a techie who came over to the church's office after hearing the gist of the problem.
James's techie friend immediately pinpointed that the unlikely transactions started after James's visit to Two Peas In A Pod. He asked to see James's credit card and light shone in his eyes when he saw Joe's name on it. Hitting the search engines next, he found Joe's personal details after unwillingly paying for that info to be displayed. But as he said to James, Joe was the one who paid for that transaction.
With Joe's phone number in his hand, James called Joe. It was at that moment that the thought came into his mind that he had unwittingly once thoughtfully prayed that the door would be opened for him to come into contact with an unbeliever.
