There was a time, in American history, when the livestock industry flourished. There was also a lot of free and owned land. It emerged as a common practice for most farmers to allow their cattle to roam freely in and beyond individually owned farms.
Time came when an epidemic broke out and many cows died. Some bad people, too, took advantage of the situation and started stealing some cows that would be found wandering without anyone tending to them.
In order to protect the sector, authorities directed that farmers should restrict their herds into their farms and in kraals. Surprisingly, when this was done, more cows died.
Mr. Maverick, a story is told, one of the pioneers, was a very strategic and creative farmer. Not only did he defy the authorities’ directives, he uniquely and indelibly marked all his cows and left them to wander about and around his big farm and even beyond. The herdsmen would gather them back in the evening and those which wandered far would soon or later be found easily and driven back by anyone who found them or sent message to Maverick to go and collect them.
Within a short time, Maverick became a famous millionaire.
Two thousand and sixteen years ago, mankind, like Maverick’s cows, was wandering around, attracted by lures of the world. The old serpent, taking advantage of this, too, was wandering along looking for someone to afflict, kill and devour. But following Jesus’ death at calvary, those who acknowledge that they are sinners and that Jesus is the Saviour, confess, repent, forsake their sins and gratefully believe that they have been forgiven, they will be saved. The mark of salvation they receive will protect them against the enemy, receive eternal life and become co-heirs with the Son of God.

I found the history of cow branding very interesting and like the way you tied it in to God's branding of his children.
