For weeks now Katie had put on a brave face in front of her co-workers and family, pretending she was fine with the whole embarrassing ordeal. But the brave smile on her face did not take away the pain and embarrassment she felt on the inside. Sometimes Katie felt rage, while other times she felt like a limp wet rag someone had thrown on the floor and stomped on. How could Brett do this to her? The man she had dated for 3 years and was supposed to marry had simply walked away without a backward look. It seemed to Katie that even God had walked out on her. Where was He in all this mess?
"I need a break" Katie said out loud gripping the sofa pillow so tightly her fingers were turning numb. "I need to get away so I don't have to look at the wedding dress I will never wear."
Looking out the front window at the fading sun, Katie suddenly decided she would take a short weekend break, a mini vacation of sorts and get away from the prying eyes and ears of her sister Deb and her mother who kept calling to check in on her. "They must think I am dying" Katie grimly thought.
Setting to work right away, Katie stuffed a few things into a suitcase and gave her mom a quick call to make sure the cabin in Prescott was empty for the weekend. "Sure, go for as long as you need" her mother had said.
Two hours later, Katie pulled onto the gravel driveway that lead to the cabin her dad had built some years earlier. Katie and her family had spent many happy summers at the old cabin, laughing, roasting marshmallows, and playing games by the hour. How she missed her dad who had passed away three years ago from a sudden heart attack. Dad was always patient and quick to listen to any concerns or questions she might have. He would often say "Katie, take your troubles to Jesus, He really does care for you."
As Katie sat thinking about all her memories, a tear slowly ran down her cheek and she realized she had not been taking her cares to Jesus but instead she had been focusing on her disappointment. Getting out of the car, she walked up to the front porch and turned the key in the door feeling a sense of peace she had not felt since the breakup. "Yes, this is just what I needed; a weekend alone with Jesus who cares for me." "Thanks Dad" she whispered as she flipped on the light.
