The train was eastbound as it made its way through the black night. Later, as he tried to reconstruct the event in his mind, he was never clear as to what time it had happened. He was absorbed in a novel when a noise at the front of his car caught his attention. The door of the car opened and slammed shut with a metallic clang. It briefly let in the racket of the steel wheels, then shut it out. He saw her moving down the aisle. She was dressed in white: white skirt, white jacket, and matching shoes. Her hair was black, coiffed and expertly done. Her makeup was subtle, and in good taste. Her attire fit well and worked together to both hide and reveal her femininity. It was a vision which was beautiful but not salacious. She approached his seat and walked past him, with elegance and an insouciance of which only a woman is capable. She never glanced in his direction or took her eyes from the other end of the car where she was going. He didn’t know to which car she belonged; it was not his car because the door behind him opened, let in the noise of the train, and slammed shut and she was gone, leaving only a trace of the perfume she was wearing.

He got off the train three hours later. From the platform he watched the cars as they accelerated past him. He hoped to once more get a glance of her, but there was no trace.

He left the platform with a feeling of disappointment, got in a cab and drove away.

Although he rode that train many times in succeeding years, he never saw her again. He never forgot the woman in white. He wondered often: “Who is she? What is her name? Where is she from? Where was she going?”

“Chance encounters,” he thought. “Our lives are full of them. Chance encounters; they raise so many thoughts, and leave no answers.”

On second reading I think this is brilliant. The topic was good too, not typical, and kept me guessing a little. You could easily develop it a little more. The title alone can spark a lot of discussion over imagery in the story. Good work.
