He got off the train three hours later. From the platform he watched the cars as they accelerated past him. He hoped to once more get a glance of her, but there was no trace.
He left the platform with a feeling of disappointment, got in a cab and drove away.
Although he rode that train many times in succeeding years, he never saw her again. He never forgot the woman in white. He wondered often: “Who is she? What is her name? Where is she from? Where was she going?”
“Chance encounters,” he thought. “Our lives are full of them. Chance encounters; they raise so many thoughts, and leave no answers.”
