The horn of a cab blares in your ear. "Hey, what are ya' thinkin'!" screams the driver from the cab window. Your commute into the city was miserable. The train was delayed by signal problems and now you are late for work. The boss will be in the office ready to unleash the duties of the day the moment you arrive.
You get the computer started and open your email to find 50 messages waiting to greet you. The clock just made 9:00am. The phone rings and it's the boss wondering where you were.
. . . gentle breezes rustle the leaves of the trees . . .
Cell phone goes off as you're talking to the boss. The kids need to know what to eat for breakfast. Your spouse is out of town on business and they're left to fend for themselves. Great!
Maybe at lunch time you can go to the park and eat a sandwich before the chaos of the afternoon. The boss walks into your office, "Helen, we have a change of plans. Join me for a client meeting at 'Nine' and be there at 11:30." Lunch meeting at the trendy restaurant across town. YUK!
You hail a cab and tell the driver that you're late for a meeting. The next thing you know the cab is doing 90 on lower Wacker drive. You make your meeting only to find out the client cancelled while you were in the cab. Marvelous!
. . . distant song birds singing a melody . . .
Back to the office, 20 more emails and your project is getting further behind. It's 6:00pm and you missed the last express train home. You call the pizza joint near your house to have dinner delivered to your starving teenagers. The next train out of town is a milk run making every stop. Time to get caught up on some work. Never stops!
. . . babbling brook harmonizes with the swaying of the trees . . .
Getting home you find dishes to be done and laundry that never made it to the dryer. Ten o'clock rolls around and you're exhausted. The alarm clock is set to go off at five in the morning. Insanity!
As your head hits the pillow all you can thing about is getting some time off. What you need is a vacation. A retreat for your soul and body. Your mind drifts as you imagine what your retreat would be like. The random thoughts of the day come flooding back.
A creek passes through a lush green meadow. The water bubbles over the rocks of the creek bed. The gurgling sound provides an overwhelming sense of relief. The leaves on the trees sway gently in the breeze. The willows, maples, elms and ashes show the way to a slower rhythm. Song birds sing a melody that God wrote just for you.
You walk slowly through the green grasses. You take a deep breath and fill your lungs with the sweet fragrance of the flowers that fill the gardens. Fruit trees are everywhere poised to nourish your body. Your every need has been seen to by God himself.
Quiet and serene this must be paradise: Eden.
