The Doorway to Victory

Anger. It can fester in the soul, smoldering like a fire that refuses to be quenched. It can swallow up a personality, completely unnoticed, leaving nothing but the ruins of what once was, if it is allowed to. And, of course, it will lead to even a deeper darkness as it slowly eats away at the mind. We all need to be on our guard against anger, recognizing its symptoms and not allowing it to overtake our spirit.

There is, however, a remedy to anger. It is a very unlikely remedy, but it is one that we are taught by God to use unsparingly. It is to be used liberally and it costs nothing.

Love is a gift, an ointment of healing, to be given freely as He gives. Anger is painful, no matter what its origin. But love heals. My own experience has been, when dealing with the painful emotion of anger, that resting in the Lord is my greatest hiding place. He supplies me with the grace I need to be able to love. The deeper the anger, the more abundant the love, the quicker and more complete the healing. This remedy will not only move on the hearts of others involved, but also soothes the pain in my own heart and mind caused by anger.

I have seen anger destroy relationships as well as ruin lives. The hurt and pain associated with this consuming emotion grips the heart like a vice and is impossible to escape without God’s help. “In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.” Ephesians 4:26 (NIV). Holding on to anger leaves a door open for other destructive emotions. Hate is born of anger. Revenge is sought as a result of anger. But in love we have the ability to overcome. And in God we have the ability to love.

“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head, and the Lord will reward you.”
Proverbs 25:21 & 22 (NIV). Some of my most difficult experiences with anger have come from situations involving other people. I have learned through these experiences to love the way God has called me to love. Unconditionally. This, at times, is such a painful lesson to learn! However, the victories I have realized have been hiding in the midst of each situation. Some of my greatest joys have been tucked in the folds of difficult times, learning to love with the heart of God. Nothing changes a heart like the love of God. Love is the “burning coal” heaped on the head of our enemies. If we can step out of our “flesh” (emotions) and into the liquid warmth of the love of God, and we are willing to share that love, especially with those who have caused our anger, we will find a new dimension of life.

Anger can be the most destructive experience in a life. But it can also be a doorway to victory of the highest standard. God is able to take every negative situation in our lives and turn it into a positive situation. Allowing Him to guide us can only lead us to victory - over anything!
