I leapt onto the field.
Prepared with all my armor,
with sharpened blade and shield.
I thrust upon the battlefield
with confidence intact.
While unexpected armies
prepared their sneak attacks.
And quickly I discovered,
I was sorely overmatched.
And the battle overwhelmed me,
and all my hopes were dashed.
And the smoke of losing battles
filled my nostrils with despair.
And with every gasping breath
my lungs were filled with putrid air.
The kind of air that fills your soul
and chases away the light.
And leaves you with a breaking heart,
inside an endless night.
How easily the game of life
can take a desperate turn.
And leave us with unsettled minds
and hearts that ache and burn.
And just when I was looking
to raise a defeated hand,
and wave the flag of surrender
because I could no longer stand,
an unexpected Calvary
came suddenly into view.
And somewhere deep inside my heart
I heard a hopeful truth,
that the battlefield,though frightening
and strewn with blood and bone
is not the place my story ends
for I labor, not alone.
For God has oft reminded me
in God’s gentle way.
That I can face the battles, as long
as I have friends who pray.
