Topic: The Family Pet (05/15/08)
When my two longhair dachshunds, Heather and Holly, were about 10 months old, we started letting them have the run of the house when we went out. They took that responsibility so seriously. Yes, they cuddled up together on their pillow, but let one little squirrel run across the roof and they were up and barking. Sounding like the big dogs that they thought that they were, they were protecting their territory.

One day, I tried to sneak inside, but those sharp ears picked up the sound of the key in the door. The protest began, as they stood at the top of the steps, little legs stiff, ears up and alert. I made my way to the bottom of the steps, not letting them know that it was I. Rounding the corner, I jumped out into plain site with a big “BOO”! Well, you never saw such short little legs turn and move so fast. I found them under the bed. Once they saw who it was, they came out wagging and wiggling. Some watchdachs they were!

The years have passed and my two little girls are now almost 14 years old. When we are away, they still cuddle together on the pillow at the top of the steps. However, age has taken away their acute hearing. It saddens me a bit as I walk over to them, finding them sound asleep. I crouch down to wake them gently, telling them how special they are to me. I have learned the truth about the word DOG being GOD spelled backwards. The love that these two have given me is a reflection of the unconditional love that the Lord has for all of us. The blessing that these two have been in my life continually fill me with thanksgiving to my Lord for the wonderful gift that He has given to me in Heather and Holly.

A tribute that is heartfelt. You have plenty of space - I would have liked a more complete description of Holly and Heather. Sure, they are long-haired dachs, but every dog is different "from the pack" in some way. What is it you find special about each of them? Excellent writing for a first entry. Great title. :)

Well written story. I too would have loved you to have used more of the 750 words to tell us more about the 'savage beasts'. Aww fancy frightening the poor little babies :) Great first entry, well done!

A lovely tribute to your canine "children." So endearing. I would have loved to hear more -- maybe more descriptions of the dogs themselves, perhaps, or more "exploits.
