the door.
"Hey! It's not the New Year yet!" Helen invited them in from
the blizzardy night. The grandfather clock upstairs chimed 8:00 PM.
"Brr!" Mr. Johnson commented. "It ought to be 50 degrees below out
there! We had a hard time trying to get here!"
"But..." Helen said, "You only live next door."
"I rest my case!" he replied. He didn't make any sense.
Helen took her neighbors' heavy coats and hung them up. She said,
"Come into the living room and warm up by the fire. I'll get coffee."
Later, they were talking in the living room, enjoying their hot
coffee, when there was a knock on the door. Helen got up to answer it.
When she opened the door, her hair almost stood up. In the doorway was
a tall young man. In his arms was a young lady, unconscious and hurt.
"Please!" the man pleaded. "I need to come in! She's been hit!"
"Yes," Helen replied. The man stepped inside, kicked
his boots off, and followed Helen into the living room.
"Oh my!" Mrs. Johnson cried out. "What happened?"
Helen commanded, "Mrs. Johnson, call the ambulance! Mr. Johnson,
get some warm blankets from the closet. Don't worry. She'll be fine!"
The young man laid the girl on the couch. "The phone is down!" Mrs.
Johnson called from the kitchen.
"What? Oh-no! Get the first aid kit from the drawer!" Helen knelt
down beside the girl. Mrs. Johnson ran into the room with the kit. Mrs.
Johnson opened the it and held it out to Helen. "What's hurt?"
"I don't know! She might have some broken bones!" the man replied.
Helen began to touch the girl from head to toe, trying to find broken
bones. "What's she doing?"
"Helen was in a First-Aid course. She graduated lowest of the
class." Mrs. Johnson smiled.
The man gulped. "Great!"
"She has a broken leg, but it can be fixed easily." Helen
took a bandage out from the kit and prepared to bandage the leg. "Wait!
I don't have a splint!"
"Hey!" a cry from the closet yelled. Everyone looked to see Mr.
Johnson half covered with old newspapers. "Helen! Where did all these
papers come from?"
"I've been meaning to get rid of those..." She paused. "Hey! Mr.
Johnson! Bring some of those newspapers over here!" Mr. Johnson tried to
pick the papers up, but they kept spilling from his arms. The young man
went ran over to help Mr. Johnson. They brought over an arm full. Helen
started to wrap the papers around the girl's lower right leg. Helen quickly
wrapped the bandage around the newspaper. When she was finished, she said,
"That should do."
"How can I repay you all?" the young man asked.
"Well, I know one way," Helen replied. "You can stay here and
celebrate new years with us."
"Well...sure! By the way...I'm Brian. My fiancee, Rachel, and I
were on our way to a party when my car broke down. She came out to help
and was hit by a sports car. I'm glad your house wasn't too far from
where we stopped."
"Well, maybe God meant this to happen for a reason," Mrs. Johnson
said.
"Who?" Brian asked.
"Are either of you a Christian?" Helen asked.
"Rachel is."
"Would you like to learn about God?" Mr. Johnson asked.
"Yes."
Mr. Johnson grinned widely. "Then sit down and listen.
After hearing all about the Lord and His promises, Brain asked,
"So, all you have to do to become a Christian is ask God into my life?"
The three others nodded.
Suddenly, Rachel started to wake up. "Where am I?" she asked.
"You and I are in Helen's house. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and
Helen helped both of us."
Rachel sat up on the couch. "What do you mean?"
Brain replied, "I'm going to give my life to the Lord."
"You are?" Rachel's eyes shone. The couple hugged.
"Are you ready to pray?" Mrs. Johnson asked.
"Yes."
Everyone bowed their heads. Brain prayed, "Dear Lord, please
forgive me for all the sins I have done. I want You to come into my
heart. I will open my heart's door for you. Amen."
Just then, the grandfather clock struck midnight. Everyone cheered,
"Happy New Year!"
