When I saw a rose
others saw beauty
I counted the thorns.
When others saw a beautiful day
I looked for clouds in the sky.
I watched
as the world went by
and with each passing moment
I asked the word why?
What does it all mean?
What does it matter?
In a room filled with light
I saw all of the shadows.
The children were always a bother
and my relatives were ungrateful.
Others went about cheerfully
as the holidays came and went
I complained about every dollar spent.
bah!humbug! that was my reply.
People began to avoid me
and I couldn't imagine why?
Until one day
as I walked past a mirror
and caught a glimpse of myself
and wondered why the horrible frown?
And I asked "Why am I not happy?"
As negatives always take away
I began to realize how much happiness
I had subtracted from my life
by adding all the bitterness.
I began to look around
at all the pluses in my life
and amazingly
the good things began to multiply.
I saw my children for the blessings they were.
I felt the love in my home
that I thought had grown cold.
I saw cloudless skies
and the beauty of a rose.
The sum of the equation is this:
true happiness
is found within ourselves
and how we think.
