When I think about the emotion of being happy, or happiness, I must confess that this is an emotion I don’t always want. You see, happiness is an emotion quickly stolen from you. You can be happy one moment and sad the next. Happiness if fleeting, I’ve heard some say, and it’s true.
Happiness depends on external circumstances to sustain it. If someone gives you a gift, you will be happy to receive it. Later, after the gift has worn out or has been outgrown, the happiness you felt is gone. If someone makes a request of you, you can be happy to help. After the task has been accomplished, happiness fades as the appreciation for your effort is gone.
I choose to pursue joy instead. Joy is more than just an emotion or feeling. It is a state in which no matter the circumstances around you, you can still have a joyful heart. Joy is what puts that spring in your step even when your foot hurts. Joy radiates from your inner being. Joy gives you peace no matter the storm around you. Joy is contagious.
