The bright lights illuminate her form, exposing her and, she feels, her every thought and feeling to the people staring at her with their judgmental eyes from below. She glances over to her left, looking for comfort in other’s eyes. She finds none, just a message to hurry up and start. She feels a bead of sweat gather on the back of her neck. Her eyes search the crowd, looking for a familiar form, but can not find it; the lights are too bright. She hears a cough in the crowd. Hurry UP!, she thinks to herself. She hears the click, clack of The Teacher’s stiletto heels approaching her. She looks over at her and inwardly recoils at the fake smile plastered on her face like a clown. She stands beside her and leans into the microphone, “Sorry for the delay. It seems this one hear is suffering from a little stage fright!” She laughs mechanically while grabbing the back of her shirt. Hard. “We are going to let Miss Tracy go next, and let Miss Shannon here take a little rest and gather her nerves.”
She jerks Shannon with her over to the side of the stage, where she is greeted by the snickers of her classmates. She jerks away from The Teacher and sits on a chair. She rests her head and brown hair in her trembling hands. Tracy’s song starts. Shannon begins crying softly so that no one else will hear her. Dear Jesus, she prays to herself, help me Jesus. Give me peace, Your peace. Be with me while I sing your praises for them to hear.
Tracy’s song ends. She struts backstage after taking a few bows, basking in the accolades. She flashes a smirk at Shannon. She wipes her eyes and prepares to sing her song. Be with me, Jesus., she prays as the lights blind her. She steps up to the mike and fumbles with it for a minute, stalling. She takes a breath. She feels someone put a hand on her shoulder. She looks up, and into the face of Everlasting Peace, the One who hears her prayers and answers them, and feels a surge of confidence. She smiles. She turns to the mike and gives the man in the sound booth his cue. Her song, “Never Alone” By Barlow Girl, begins.
