Dear Friends and Family in England:
Ahh we find ourselves fairing well here in the new land. Temperatures are freezing though and we hope to make it through the winter months. We have found a place to settle near a rock named Plymouth. The voyage over here from England was brutal. Food was scarce and people were falling ill. We lost 2 souls during our voyage but joyous news for the Hopkins they gave birth to a healthy baby boy and named Oceanus Hopkins and another baby was born during our anchorage at Cape Cod another little soul named Peregrine White.
After the sixty-five day journey we are all exhausted and are trying to establish living quarters. Much of our belongings still remain on the ship and it will be a long process of sorting and making sense of the confusion which lays before us.
We thank God for our trip here to America and a new land. We are have decided on a governing system and they even elected me as their first governor. The forty-one persons involved in creating a plantation covenant have signed the Mayflower Compact. I pray with God’s help we can become one united nation and continue to spread God’s message here in the new land.
Well God speed to those who are back in London. I hope soon you too will be able to join us in our new found freedom. I pray that all will be safe and hope to see you again soon.
Love
John Carver
Plymouth Colony Governor
