In 1971, I did not know Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I was hanging around at the parking lot in the village where I grew up with three of my friends. We were wondering what we could do for some excitement, when someone mentioned “the haunted house.” We jumped into our cars and headed out into the country. The house was about ten miles from town, and we had to go down several dirt roads. We were warned that when we arrived at the house we had to hurry and get in and out quickly, because the people in the house on the corner call the Police when they see someone entering the road that lead to the house. One of the guys snuck around the house and hid inside, as we worked our way through the front door. When our “subjects” were in the house, the “ghost” jump out and screamed! When we collected ourselves from our laughter, someone mentioned we had to get out of there because our time was up. We hit the end of the drive, and sped down the road as quick as we could. There was one road that lead to “dead mans curve.” I was following the other car, because they were familiar with the area. I told my buddy, that quite away back I saw some headlights. The closer we got to the curve those lights were getting close. I told him that it must be a cop, and he was almost on our bumper! The other car slid around the curve, and that gave me enough time to slow down to make the curve. As soon as I turned right, I looked in the mirror and saw a blur go straight across. I started flashing my lights. but they wouldn’t stop. I drove about a mile before they pulled over. We got along side of them, and told them someone went off the road right after we turned the corner. They just laughed , and headed back towards town. We turned around and drove back to the scene. As we approached the corner, we saw some deep ruts that disappeared at the edge of the road. I told my friend I was going to park a little ways up the road, so they wouldn’t see our car. As we walked to the edge and looked down in the ravine, we saw a car about 50 feet from the road. There was a man stumbling towards us with his flashlight waving wildly in the air. We hollered at him, “are you o.k.?
He said “I think so!” We noticed we was a State patrolman. He shined his light on the car, and the state police reflector lit up! He then shined his light at his shirt, and he was wearing a “safe driver of 1971” lapel pin. We asked him if he needed a ride back to town, and he declined. “I have a tow truck coming to get me, but thanks for the offer. Just then the other carload of guys pulled up! He told them to get out of the car, and spread em. He found the “ghost sheet" in the back seat, and asked them what it was for? We saw this as the perfect time to leave, and told him we were glad he was o.k. He thanked us again, and got back to the task at hand. A little later back at the lot, a car full of some pretty unhappy guys returned! I’m glad they had a good sense of humor!
