THE TWO FACES OF VISION
“Hey, Grams. Grams, it’s me, Jason.”
“I’m here in the bed. Come on in sweetheart.”
“Grams, I let myself in with the key you gave me. You couldn’t hear me knocking. Are you alright?”
“I’m fine. My seeing is so blurry this morning I thought it might be better to stay in bed for a while. It’s been so long since I’ve seen you, I’m glad you stopped by.” She opened her arms for the usual hug she knew she would get. Jason was such a blessing, but he also was one of her goals.
Leaning over to her Jason gave her a bear hug and a kiss on the cheek. “It’s good to see you, Grams.”
“You are always a blessing to me, Jason. My grandson with the loving heart.”
“May I get you something to eat or help you find the bathroom?”
“I’m doing just fine. Thank you anyway. Why don’t you pull up that chair and sit beside me? We can talk better that way.”
Pulling up the rather rickety chair he reached for his grandmother’s hand and held it between his own. “I’m concerned about your vision, Grams. What do you think is causing your problem?”
“It’s my blood sugar running high again. It affects my sight when it is too high. I have taken my insulin shot, and that should bring the sugar down.”
“I sure hope so. Do you need someone to stay with you for the day? I can call Mom and she will come.”
“Naw. I’ll be fine in a while. The Lord will take care of me. You know, He is the greatest physician of all.”
“Alright, but promise me you will call her on your cell phone if you need help.”
“I promise. Now, tell me about your own vision.”
Jason began to squirm in his chair. Thinking to himself he surmised that it always came down to the subject he felt the most uncomfortable with. Finally, he sat perfectly still and said nothing.
“Jason, did you understand what I asked you?”
“I have 20/20 eyesight, Grams. I don’t wear glasses. Why do you think I am having problems seeing?” The minute he asked he knew he had just opened himself up.
“Jason, I am not talking about your eyes. I’m talking about your soul. Have you been doing anything about your life?”
“Grams, I have a great life. There is not one thing that I can think of that needs to be changed. I’m happy right where I am.”
“Did you know that God gives you everything you have? Even the breath you breathe is given by Him. Don’t you think it is time to respond to Him and His purpose for your life?”
“I am carrying out my purpose as much as I can tell. Soon I will have my hard earned license for being a Pharmacist. It has always been what I wanted to do. What other purpose is there?”
“Yes, Jason and I am proud of you for getting your education. However, that and all the material things on this earth will not carry out His purpose for you.”
“Well, how do I find His purpose if being a pharmacist is not? I feel fulfilled and that’s pretty good for someone my age.”
“Each one of us is placed here on earth to glorify the Lord. If you don’t have a personal relationship with him what good is all the other things? They are just things. The Lord loves you so much that . . .”
Jason interrupted her, which was something out of character for him. “You have told me that over and over, Grams. I know what you are going to say.”
“It is the only vision that is going to be right for anyone on this earth.”
“Tell you what Grams. I have to go now, but I promise to give it more serious thought. How’s that?”
“Oh, I’m so happy about that. Please don’t put asking Him into your heart though. None of us know when our time is up, and we will never have a chance once our bodies die. There is no turning back.”
Giving his grandmother a kiss, he turned to leave. “Thanks Grams. Please don’t forget your promise to call Mom if you need her.”
“I will. Please don’t forget your promise to call your Father who loves you so much.”
