HUMPHREY DUMFRIES | Writing Challenge By Philippa Geaney 02/23/22 |

In his name, for a start, and his shape even more.
To escape these sad setbacks, the boy loved to climb,
The higher the better - until pride ‘came entwined.
‘I’m ever so clever’, he cried from his seat,
As he looked on the children
Who played at his feet.
Though Humphrey’s not ‘Humpty’, he still couldn’t hear
How his tongue had betrayed him, and his lisp made full clear.
With his fine plastered hair, an egg head for brain,
He sat on his seat and ignored the refrain,
Coming from children who teased in a rhyme
A story of truth that would last a long time.
‘Come down to be near us’, their cry did arise,
But Humphrey was proud and very unwise.
‘I feel like a king while seated up here!
I’ll stand up and summons my army, appear!
They’ll scatter you commoners, and soon you will find
I, Humpty will reign, for the proud Dumpty's line.’
If only he’d changed from a manner so rude,
And rejected, what was, a mean attitude,
His tongue may have shed its crippling tie,
His heart may have softened and blessings come by.
With a soft heart that was no longer proud
He may not have toppled into the crowd.
While a wall is a structure for protection or play
Sometimes in using, vain reasons hold sway,
Then as with young Humphrey, respect is not found
And pride rises up – before tumbling to ground.
Before writing Humphrey’s demise, I researched the fact that Humpty had fallen into the Public Domain.
Blessings.
