As she gently soothes to sleep
Are the hands that poured the oceans
But are now in Mary’s keep.
Growing hands that hold a handsaw
As the carpenter directs
Are the hands that grew the forests,
For now to Joseph He subjects.
Loving hands of gentle Shepherd
Touch the lives of young and old,
The Creator incarnated
Came to earth to save our souls.
Healing hands that open blind eyes
Give repentant sinners peace,
Show compassion to the humble,
Grant the demon-bound release.
Blessed hands dispensing mercy,
He shows favour to each one;
Bread of life He freely offers,
He bids all who hear to come.
Nail-scarred hands that paid my ransom
On that rugged bloodied cross
Where the Gentle crushed the savage—
Jesus did it all for us.
Gentle hands still touch the sinners
Through all those who’ve heard Him call,
He equips us by His Spirit
To be His hands to one and all.
