The first time I saw Steve was at the soup kitchen. No doubt everyone noticed him. Very tall, dressed in clothes that weren’t filthy but dirty. That wasn’t what caused you to see him in the crowd of homeless and low income. It was the giant of a voice.
Smiling. Loud. He was happy and immediately started talking about Jesus. Some thought he was on the “crazy†side.
“I’m down on my luck but my soul is happy because my heart is filled with the love of Jesus,†Steve bellowed. As he talked he kept his bowl of soup but he handed the rest of his meal to others. One was given his ham sandwich, another his bag of potato chips. He even gave his Little Debbie cake to a smiling child.
Some said he had been a school teacher. He finally had been able to buy an old clunker and found a one bedroom in public housing. Steve opened his apartment for other homeless to shower. He visited three or four churches a week. Steve became a driver for the homeless to attend church or go to Wal-Mart.
We became fast friends while others shunned him. We went to church together. Used coupons to eat at Wendy’s. Talked about politics and hell. Heaven was one of our favorite subjects. And we prayed. He was a fanatic about prayer. This giant frequently spouted we had to communicate with God.
Steve died. Cancer. Young and old and the poor surrounded his death bed. He told them not to cry. He told them he knew he was on an eternal trip to heaven. He urged everyone to search their hearts and make sure they knew Jesus. One of them later surrendered his life to Christ.
I don’t pray for my friend Steve anymore.
I don’t have to. This giant of faith has finished his goal. No pain. No sin. He’s wearing a new shiny robe as he talks to Jesus for eternity.
Steve’s prayers have been answered.
