Did any teacher teach you
About a city in Peru
With name of Machu Picchu?
The Incas built a fortress there
So many years ago,
Before a time remembered—
Six centuries or so.
This citadel of ancient times,
High in the Andes Mountains,
Between two peaks is nestling
Above some sparkling fountains.
The English meaning of the place,
“Old Peak,” describes it well.
I’d love to be a listener
For stories it could tell.
Beside the Urubamba Gorge,
They used huge stones for walls
And terraced hillsides that were fed
By nature’s waterfalls.
This was a place of safety for
An Incan population.
Conquistadores seeking them
Could not find this location.
Their worship here was symbolized
By temple to their sun god.
It’s sad to know this people lacked
The knowledge of the One God.
I doubt that those who built it here
Imagined it would be
Abandoned by inhabitants
Within one century.
Lost city of the Incas was
Discovered once again
In early nine-teen hundreds
By a Yale historian.
So one day when you’re feeling bored
And don’t know what to do,
Just close your eyes and dream with me
Of journey to Peru.
From the Temple of Three Windows
We’ll see scenery dramatic,
And we’ll visit age-old places
At this city enigmatic.
But if you navigate stone steps
(One hundred flights will do it),
You’ll have to try them by yourself;
I’m simply not up to it.
