Grief assaults me in peculiar ways. Sometimes he’s a violent storm, trampling my
soul, leaving me battered, bruised. Other times he is slow and sorrowful. I wonder as I sit
aching tonight, my head pounding, heavy heart, can grief be turned to good?
It is not just my heavy heart that hurts, but I am also tired and bone sore from physical
and emotional wounds. I relax in a chair that wraps its softness and warmth around me. I
find him in his gentle state.
Resting my head on a pillow, my feet up on a nearby bed, weeping overcomes me. Not a loud weeping but an inward cry, tinged with soft moans, arises as if from a deep well. Sometimes I cannot find the energy to cry. Along with grief there is pain, sorrow, and doubt. A sweet awareness of God’s tender arms begins to permeate the room.
I sense that He hears the words of my soul.. The tears come; just slight – just barely,
brimming in my eyes. There they rest when sleep captures me.
Awaking twenty minutes later, the tears crest and fall. Rinsed and refreshed I am in
wonder that though tears are falling my pain has fled. Yes, as our Lord walks me through this valley, I am learning not to fear grief, for pain is overcome by a greater comfort.
