TITLE: Miracle vs Death By Manubha Ramdunnie 03/19/08 |

Saturday, 18 November 1995, was a beautiful sunny day, but as I lay on the hospital bed being prepped for my caesarean section, my mind swarmed as I tried to fathom how God works - I was about to bring a new life into this world, while my cousin-brother lay fighting for his life in the oncology section of the very same hospital! It truly boggled me.
This should have been a joyful time in my life, but how could I enjoy the fruits of motherhood when the family was in turmoil! Sarita had to be delivered almost two-and-a-half months early with a slim chance of survival, plus my dear cousin-brother was fighting cancer, which was rapidly spreading throughout in his body.
The baby’s growth was perfectly normal during my pregnancy, but I could not carry her full-term because of a lower back problem. The doctors suggested terminating my pregnancy, but my husband and I refused. I trusted God to carry us through this pregnancy and continued praying for my cousin’s healing.
The doctors gave me steroids and other medication to strengthen the baby’s lungs, etc. in order to deliver her early, but I could not bear the pain and my leg was going numb so they had to conduct a caesarean section earlier than expected. Sarita was placed in neonatal immediately. I felt so guilty seeing my baby girl fighting for her life with machine cords entangling her tiny body. She had to be fed through a thin tube through her nose. Every time I looked at her, guilt tugged at my heart because she was a healthy baby in my womb, but now lay in the incubator because I wasn’t strong enough to carry her.
Sarita was only a few days old and still in hospital when my cousin-brother passed away. The family was devastated! He was only 34 and I lost someone who was so close and dear to me. We all grieved in our own way.
I felt totally lost, as if I was in a constant nightmare. “When will I awake from this horrendous dream? When will everything be fine?” We were all emotionally drained. Up to this day my aunt is still distraught over her son’s death and my cousin-in-law still mourns her husband.
Yes, I was upset with God. I wanted answers! Why did He take my cousin? He performs miracles everyday, we asked for one and felt like He ignored our cries and pleas. Through all this I failed to realise that my miracle was lying in hospital fighting for her life! Even though she was in an out of hospital for the next five months, today, Sarita is a healthy 12-year-old, doing well in school and is as normal as any other child. No respiratory problems, her sight is fairly okay, she is slightly petit, but on overall she is well and strong.
You see, according to us [humans] it is always about what we want! We fail to realise God has a plan and purpose for each one of us - it is His timing and not ours.
Ecclesiastes 3: 1-4
Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses. He sets the time for birth and the time for death, the time for planting and the time for pulling up, the time for killing and the time for healing, the time for tearing down and the time for building, the time for sorrow and the time for joy, the time for mourning and the time for dancing.
