TITLE: Do Opposites Really Attract? By Manubha Ramdunnie 03/19/08 |

Psalm 19:12-14 “Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults.
Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”

How often have you heard some couples say we are total opposites? “I suppose that is what attracted us to each other!”
Then a few years, sometimes even in just a few months, down the line you hear, “We have nothing in common!” Well, what do you expect if you are total opposites? You barely have the same interests and you are likely to lead different social lives, resulting in lack of communication and hardly spending time together, which eventually causes a great rift between the couple and which is most likely to end in separation or divorce, or even worse – being trapped in a loveless marriage!
We have to be realistic! This happens to Christian couples as well. We use Christianity as a common ground in relationships and rightly so! In spite of this, if both the man and woman are not firmly rooted in Christ’s foundation, then it will develop into an unstable relationship.
It is so important to build a marriage or relationship on a strong, solid foundation and as Christians that foundation can only be Jesus Christ. What a joy to worship and praise our Lord as a couple. Do not get me wrong! Spending time alone with God is equally important. We are individuals and need to build a good relationship with Christ. However, when husband and wife are in agreement and bring their supplication before our Father, He will honour the request.
There is power in agreement.
I recently conducted a “dating” survey just to establish how many Christian couples are into the dating game. I was shocked that approximately 30% on a particular site claimed to be unhappy and just wanted a friend they could talk to, even if it is just via email or sms! “Want to add some spice to my dull life,” one said. “I don’t believe in divorce, but want someone to talk to!” said another. The real shocker was married women seeking discreet female activity partners.
What is happening to our society? Have we really reached a point where it is the norm of life to have a “friend” outside of marriage or a relationship? Is it worth compromising happiness for worldly whims? What we fail to realise and understand is that we can put on a façade for the entire world, but God knows what happens behind closed doors and He knows our inner most thoughts and desires!
Let’s not give in to the subtle deceptions of the world and satan. Invite Jesus to be the head of your home. If your family is built on a solid foundation of Godly love, unity, respect and trust, you and your house shall not be shaken!
