TITLE: (At Wounded Knee) As We Died Quiety in the Snow By Jeremy Iman 06/18/07 |
|
They flexed their might and sought to steal our home from out our hand
There was no light inside their chests, no goodness to be found
And in the night they planned to place our bodies in the ground
On papers white we marked our names and swallowed deep our pride
Soon came the fight of soul and mind, an endless drowning tide
How short our sight, that with the pen we thought we could find peace
Try as we might, the white man’s steady growing wouldn’t cease
Our tongues we bite; the treaties failed, the names all thrown away
So wrong turned right, our land’s now theirs, the great white voices say
Our men don’t fight, it was replaced, their will to carry on
With chilling spite, down-trodden hearts, and sadness for what’s gone
And though, despite they claimed our homes, our land, nearly our lives
At dawns first light they took our bows, our guns, hatchets, and knives
They sought a fight and we could sense that violence was near
Our guns clasped tight between our hands, our eyes widened in fear
Then gun smoke white, a brilliant flash, and our destruction came
Bloodshed so bright our hearts were turned, never to be the same
Their faces white, and knives so long they pierce the very soul,
Sneer in delight as bullets carve so many gapping holes
Look to the light, dear brothers, the Great Spirit points the way
Through fading sight we see a land that can’t be signed away
Hold loved ones tight, from Wounded Knee they never more will go
The white man’s fight has ended us; we died here in the snow
“And I can see that something else died there in the bloody mud, and was buried in the blizzard. A people’s dream died there. It was a beautiful dream…” -Black Elk
