Oh Lord,
sometimes I wish
I was not so Mary-like.
I look
at all the Marthas
and they're so organized.
Like Mary
I'd rather spend my precious time
close to you.
But Lord,
who will clean the floors?
Oh Lord,
sometimes I wish
I was not so Peter-like.
I look
at all the beloved Johns
and they're so quietly serene.
Like Peter
I want to rush forward
declaring my faith in you.
But Lord,
who will listen when you speak?
Oh Lord,
sometimes I wish
I was not so Sarah-like.
I look at all the Marys
and they're so submissive, sweet and pure.
Like Sarah
I laugh at the impossibilities
but then believe so much I take things in my own hands.
But Lord,
who will obey with patient compliance?
Oh Lord,
sometimes I wish
I was not so much like me
I look at all the other children
and they're so good and fine and strong.
The "me" I am
rarely feels so exemplary
But Lord,
who will you use if not the weak like me?
