Does it sound appealing? Does it create interest?
I would appreciate any critique you would wish to share. Thank-you!
Dear Editor:
Carl Dudley has said, “In small churches, more people know more people ... When church size is measured in human relationships, the small church is the largest expression of the Christian faith.”
After fifteen years of pastoral ministry to Small Towns and Rural Churches, an interesting trend is becoming apparent - the small church is a great source for discipleship. But a problem arises in the fact that we have not done a good job of training small congregations to accomplish what they often do partly without even knowing it.
One of the greatest textbooks on rural ministry is the book of Colossians. It has numerous principles and applications that apply to the ability of small churches, and anyone that really wants to have an impact on young believers, to learn the precious and needed ministry of discipleship.
Book Title (working title):
“Small Flights - A Primer on Small Town and Rural Ministry”
Word Count:
100,000+ words.
Promo sentence:
Thrust into the tiny town of Colossae while on vacation to the resort village of Laodicea, the young Jewish man Simeon is forced to challenge everything he once held dear. Can this small town effect any dynamic change in the young man searching for meaning and purpose in life?
Sales handles:
“Colossae - small town with the potential to make great impacts.”
“Small Flights can have great impacts.”
Back cover copy:
Shortly after Jesus Christ returns to heaven, the early Church is struggling with the overwhelming question of how to impact the world with the wonderful message of Good News they have received. But Jehovah has left them with an amazing tool, the Ministry of Discipleship - multiplying one another through mutual edification. They don’t have to impact the whole world, they just have to reach out to those around them in love and impact those that God has called them to minister to.
Into this community comes a young man who desperately needs answers. Fleeing a life without meaning in nearby Ephesus, Simeon needs the answers that only the wonderful work of Jesus Christ can provide.
Journey into the world of the emerging Church as the book of Colossians come alive in this fictitious story of the way in which a small community affects the life of a needy man.
Through a series of kidnappings, a battle with a bloody gang, and the death of a highly revered man in the community, the members of the house church in Colossae show why the Good News - and a believers’ place in the Great Commission can accomplish more than we have been led to believe.
“Take Away” value of the story:
The purpose of this book is to give those who desire to “make disciples” a simple and effective method through which they can disciple young believers and bring them to a position of maturity within the context of small towns and rural communities. We cannot tell the impact the mentoring of a single younger believer can have on the world!
Marketing Ideas:
As pastor of a small, rural church I have become intrigued by the idea of “Pyromarketing through the local church”, and believe that I have some contacts that would allow for a “grass-roots” marketing scheme employing the various churches that are a part of our denomination and a part of the larger body of conservative, evangelical churches in the US. I will be addressing this area in attempting to market my self-published work over the coming months.
